Rēzekne municipality is situated in the Eastern part of Latvia named Latgale. It is located near the eastern border of Latvia which is also the border of the European Union. The location provides many opportunities for cooperation with Russia and Belarus as the closest neighbours.

The territory of the municipality is crossed by the international highways Riga- Moscow, St. Petersburg- Warsaw and international railways. The territory is used as a transit corridor for many companies.

Rēzekne municipality consists of 25 rural territories (Audriņu, Bērzgales, Čornajas, Dricānu, Feimaņu, Gaigalavas, Griškānu, Ilzeskalna, Kantinieku, Kaunatas, Lendžu, Lūznavas, Maltas, Mākoņkalna, Nautrēnu, Nagļu, Ozolaines, Ozolmuižas, Pušas, Rikavas, Sakstagala, Silmalas,  Stoļerovas, Strūžānu, Verēmu)

Rēzekne municipality is one of the richest municipalities in Latvia concerning cultural monuments. There are 237 state protected cultural monuments in Rēzekne municipality.

Ltd “Verems” is the largest industrial company of the municipality. Ltd “Sprūževa” is active in the field of agriculture.
